Caring For Your Jewelry

Fine Jewelry is a precious possession designed to last a lifetime. However, proper care is required to assure the lasting qualities of your jewelry. You may bring your jewelry by Van Doren Jewelers anytime to receive a free checkup and cleaning by one of our trained staff members.

Use the following information as a guide for cleaning and protecting your jewelry.

General Care Tips

  • Visit your jeweler at least 2 to 3 times a year for a professional cleaning and inspection.
  • Store your jewelry in a clean dry place.
  • Keep your jewelry in a fabric-lined jewelry case or in a box with compartments and dividers.
  • Always thoroughly rinse and dry your jewelry after cleaning at home and before storage.
  • Remove all jewelry before showering , swimming, and doing housework because chlorine and bleach can permanently damage or discolor gold jewelry.

Gold, Platinum and Diamond Jewelry

  • Clean your jewelry regularly using a commercial jewelry cleaner or mild detergent. Dip the jewelry into the solution and use a soft brush to dislodge dirt form under the setting and in the cracks.
  • Do not wear your jewelry while doing rough work, especially rings. You can easily break or bend a prong and even though diamonds are one of natures hardest materials, a sudden blow can chip it.
  • Avoid touching your diamonds: body oils create a film on a diamond’s surface that diminishes its brilliance.

Colored Gemstones

  • Some colored gemstones require specific care and cleaning: check with your jeweler for specific instructions.
  • Apply Cosmetics, lotions or sprays before putting on colored gemstone jewelry to avoid damaging or dulling the brilliance of your gemstones.
  • After wearing wipe with a clean, soft, slightly damp cloth to enhance the luster of the gemstones and remove any chemicals or body oils.
  • Do not expose gemstones to saltwater, pool water or harsh chemicals, such as chlorine. These liquids may slowly erode the finish and polish of gemstones and damage their mountings.
  • If you have an active lifestyle, take extra precaution with some types of gemstone jewelry. Ask your jeweler which gemstones are more prone to breakage.
